Breast Reduction Reduces the Risk of Breast Cancer

Breast reduction surgery is the process of surgically removing tissues such as skin, fat and breast, and giving the desired shape to the breast.

Before surgical operation on the breast, comprehensive breast imaging and testing methods are used to learn the general condition of the breast in detail. As a result of these imaging tests, the condition of the breast and unwanted formations, if any, are determined.

These formations are also called cysts or masses. The spread and type of the masses on the tissue are determined, and if deemed appropriate, removal of the mass with breast reduction surgery is also performed.

The removed mass is subjected to a detailed pathological examination. After breast reduction surgery, not only cysts or masses, but also all parts and tissues removed during the reduction procedure are sent for pathological examination in every patient, regardless of the patient’s risk of breast cancer or the status of removed tissues.

It will be determined as a result of pathological tissue examination if there is a mutation causing breast cancer in the patient.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women. If breast cancer is diagnosed early, it is a type of cancer that can be treated and there is no need to remove the entire breast.

It is not possible for breast reduction or breast shaping surgeries to completely eliminate or cure cancer. However, it has been determined that the breast reduction procedure reduces the risk of breast cancer by 50-70%.
