Dental implants are artificial tooth roots designed so as to adapt to the natural teeth and jaw structure of patients with missing tooth root. They are titanium screws placed in the mouth for the missing tooth root and fixed to the jawbone. They are completely tissue-friendly and fuse with the jawbone.

The most important thing to be considered after dental implant procedure is to pay attention to oral hygiene. In addition to routine tooth brushing, mouth wash products, special dental floss, interdental brushes should be used to keep the dental implants clean. Implant teeth, like natural teeth, may be stained and discoloured over time, so smoking and consumption of alcohol, tea and coffee are not recommended.

Any healthy patient who does not have any medical contraindications to tooth extraction and oral surgery procedures can have dental implants. Patients also need to have healthy gums and jawbones in order to get implants. In case of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, radiation treatments in the head and neck, a detailed medical examination is required for the patient.

Do Dental Implants Affect the Speech and the Ability to Eat and Drink?

Dental implants designed to replace a single tooth are inserted into the jawbone one by one, and their fusion with the jawbone occurs independently of each other. The artificial tooth attached to the dental implant is completely interlocked with the implant, and this does not allow artificial tooth to move or to be loose. Common problems encountered by denture wearers such as unstable and slipping dentures, especially while speaking, difficulty of chewing, discomfort, pain and sensitivity in the mouth caused by ill-fitting dentures etc. do not occur in dental implants. They do not affect the speech and the ability to eat and drink.

Is It Possible to Have Dental Implants in Case of Inadequate Jaw Bone and Gums to Support the Implant?

In cases where there is not enough bone in the jawbone to support the implant, it’s likely that patients need a bone grafting procedure performed to increase the amount of bone. In this procedure, bone powder is added to the area where the amount of bone is desired to be increased and a period of time must be waited for fusion with the natural bone. The graft can be taken from the person’s own body or obtained from an external source of bovine origin.

In gum problems such as receding gums, a gum surgery is performed and the gum is brought to the place where it should be. Then dental implants can be applied after a certain period of time which is waited for recovery process.

Does the Patient Get Temporary Teeth While Waiting for Recovery Process of Implants?

The most difficult and hesitation-causing situation for patients in the decision-making process for dental implants is to be toothless, i.e. is the fact that the place of the extracted or missing teeth will remain empty during the treatment process.

Since being toothless during the treatment will affect patients’ social life and self-confidence, patients have natural-looking artificial teeth that are compatible with their own teeth during the healing process. Such teeth, which are usually made of acrylic, are compatible with eating and drinking, but they are not as durable as the teeth to be permanently attached, so the consumption of hard foods that may damage the teeth should be avoided.

Does it hurt to get a dental implant?

Dental implant surgery is performed under local or, if necessary (in rare cases), general anaesthesia to prevent the patient from feeling pain. Since the dental implant procedure involves an intervention in jaw bones and gums, it is normal to experience a certain amount of pain after surgery. Such pain can be controlled with oral painkillers. A high degree of pain does not occur.
