The gastric balloon is a temporary obesity treatment that helps the patient to lose weight by reducing the volume of the gastric without surgery. It is made of silicone rubber. It is soft, smooth, and durable. Reducing stomach volume helps patients feel complete with less food and lose weight.
It is inserted through the mouth into the gastric using an endoscope by the doctor. It is then inflated with saline solution (saline). The goal is to help the patient feel full faster.
Body mass index (BMI) reflects the relationship between a person’s weight and height. A BMI over 30 is considered an indicator of obesity. The doctors recommend this procedure for people with a BMI of 30 to 40 or above.
People who have tried other non-surgical weight loss treatments, such as drug therapy but have not had a practical result may prefer gastric balloon surgery too.
- Pregnant and breastfeeding,
- Having stomach irritation or ulcer,
- People who have had a previous organ transplant are unsuitable for gastric balloon application.
To insert the balloon into the gastric, the doctor uses a flexible camera device equipped with lights called an endoscope. The doctor inserts the endoscope through the mouth and carefully examines the esophagus, gastric, and small intestine to ensure no problems. If everything looks normal, the doctor will insert a narrow tube called a catheter next to the endoscope. Attach the deflated balloon to the tip of this catheter.
The endoscope guides the catheter from the esophagus to the stomach.
After the balloon is placed in place, it is filled with solution until it reaches the size of a grapefruit. The doctor withdraws the endoscope and catheter, leaving the filled balloon in the gastric. The procedure takes about 30 minutes. There is no harm in the patient being discharged on the same day.

The gastric balloon is not surgery; there is no need for an incision. The risk of complications is shallow. It is much more economical than other operations in bariatric surgery.
After the balloon is placed in the gastric, the patient may experience problems such as nausea and vomiting, abdominal and back pain, and nervous tension for a few days. The doctor will prescribe medications to help these symptoms, which usually go away in three to five days.
Infrequent complications from a gastric balloon include:
- Deflating of the balloon in the gastric,
- Balloon out of the gastric.
The gastric balloon is designed to remain in the gastric for six months. However, the balloon can be removed when the patient completes the treatment program or when the doctor recommends it.
The doctor inserts an endoscope orally into the patient’s gastric. And it uses a catheter to puncture the balloon and drain the solution. Then the doctor removes the deflated balloon with the help of an endoscope. This process takes about 20 minutes.
Many studies have been done to find out if silicone is safe. But, there is no finding that indicates that it is objectionable.
For the first two to three days after the operation, doctors recommend a completely liquid diet. During this period, patients can consume clear soups, fruit juices, soy milk, and compote. Daily water consumption should be at least 1.5 liters, and in summer, it should be close to 2 liters.
After the first week, the doctor will apply a particular diet program for the patient.
The gastric balloon patient loses a fair amount of weight quickly after the procedure:
Month 3: Approximately 15% of excess weight
Month 6: Approximately 30% of excess weight
The most popular type of balloon must be removed after six months, so long-term weight loss depends entirely on the patient’s diet and lifestyle choices. In other words, the gastric balloon is not a permanent solution.
The procedure is simple and painless. Therefore, you do not need to stay in the hospital. You can be discharged 1-2 hours after the procedure.
You can experience up to 20 kilos or three stone weight loss, though some lose none. Your success depends on whether you make the necessary dietary adjustments or apply them well.
It can be felt for the first few days. After that, it is not felt at all.
It is extremely important to quit smoking at least 10 days before the application to avoid complications. We do not recommend smoking for the first 10 days after the application, especially during the liquid diet period. Smoking can increase the acid secretion in your gastric, which is trying to get used to the balloon, and may cause you to experience more discomfort than normal.
Alcohol after gastric balloon can also increase reflux complaints like smoking. Therefore, it should not be used at all in the first days, and alcohol should be avoided as much as possible in the future. In addition, alcoholic beverages slow your weight loss process as they are high in calories.
