Treatment?
IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) is a technique that expresses the fertilization of the egg with sperm in the laboratory environment, which is applied to help patients with reproductive health problems to have a baby. The in vitro fertilization method, which enables individuals with various fertility problems to have a baby and has become the most effective form of assisted reproductive technology, started to be applied in the late 1970s and has become one of the most preferred treatment methods today.
What are IVF treatment methods?
There are 2 different in vitro fertilization treatment methods. Classic in vitro fertilization (IVF) or microinjection (ICSI) method.
Classic in vitro fertilization (IVF): During in vitro fertilization, mature eggs are collected from the ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a laboratory setting. This fertilized egg (embryo) or eggs (embryos) are then transferred to the uterus. A full in vitro fertilization cycle takes about three weeks.
Microinjection (ICSI): In the microinjection method, one of the selected sperm from the father-to-be is injected into the ovary with the help of a fine needle under the microscope. The treatment process, which starts on the 2nd or 3rd day of menstruation, ends with embryo transfer approximately 13-19 days later.
While IVF is a method that can be preferred in cases without visible sperm problems, ICSI is preferred in cases of unexplained infertility with sperm problems.

To start IVF treatment, pregnancy should not occur because of unprotected coexistence, usually for more than 1 year. The duration of the treatment may vary according to the health status and application methods of the mother and father candidates. The standard IVF procedure yields results approximately 20 days after the treatment initiation period. The process begins on the 2nd or 3rd day of the menstrual cycle, and egg retrieval, fertilization and injection take about 9 days. The next 11 days is the waiting period required for a pregnancy test. No action is taken during this waiting period. If pregnancy is observed because of the pregnancy test, the procedure is completed successfully. If pregnancy has not occurred, the procedure can be repeated with the permission of the doctor. The process is as follows;

- Fertilization in a laboratory environment
- Embryo culture, embryo freezing if necessary
- Embryo transfer
There is no legal age limit for IVF, but the pregnancy rate is generally around 1% – 5% for 45 years and older. For this reason, many doctors do not recommend in vitro fertilization treatment for women over the age of 45. Because the application to be applied after this age has a low success rate and high risk.
Success of IVF procedure; It varies according to the age and weight of the expectant mother, the level of health problem requiring in vitro fertilization, the number of procedures, sperm quality and the laboratory technology of the in vitro fertilization centre. In couples with good quality 5th day embryo development, the chance of conceiving with the first in vitro fertilization treatment varies between 70-80%. If the first procedure is unsuccessful, the procedure can be repeated, and as the number of procedures increases, the probability of pregnancy increases.

Like every treatment method, there are some predictable and intervenable risks in IVF treatment. Risks occur due to the procedures applied or the drugs used during the treatment.

It is not possible to apply in vitro fertilization treatment in male candidates whose semen has not been detected and sperm cannot be obtained from the testis by surgical methods, in female patients who have lost their ovulation functions, in women in the menopausal period and in women who have had their womb removed because of surgical interventions. In vitro fertilization requires at least a healthy egg, healthy sperm cell and a healthy uterus that can carry the pregnancy. In the absence of any of these three elements, treatment cannot be initiated.
